OUR MONTHLY COLUMN SPOTLIGHTING OUR FRIENDS IN FRAGRANCE & LAUNDRY

Permanent press
Launderette

When you think of your local hangout spot, what are the first things that come to mind? A coffee shop, a park, maybe a bar, and…a laundromat?

Though laundromats are typically not the first place you think of for spending time with a friend, getting work done, or catching up on a book, Brooklyn, New York’s new addition, Launderette, aims to transform your laundry experience and create a space that you do more than just load your clothes, insert your coins, and come back in an hour.

Launderette founders Ireland and Ben designed a modern, light-filled space in the heart of Williamsburg featuring not only rows of washers and dryers, but modern banquettes upholstered with soft brown velvet, and cafe tables where people come to do more than just their laundry, but hang out, catch up with a friend, or get a little work done.

Laundry Sauce and Launderette both aim to transform the laundry day experience into something you look forward to, and we’re thrilled to feature them in this month’s edition of Permanent Press.

What are your backgrounds? What were you doing before Launderette?

Ben and I met in 2022 while we were both working at our previous jobs, I was in medical sales and he was in investment management. We quickly bonded over our entrepreneurial spirits and ended up leaving those jobs to start a venture together in multimedia marketing. On the surface, it was a total pivot and a seemingly random industry to dive into, but we both had a personal interest in photography and videography. We quickly realized how much we loved the ability to connect with people, tell stories, and help shape a brand through these mediums.

For about a year, we worked with hospitality groups producing various forms of content. It was during this time that we really started to understand the power of branding and the importance of creating a connection between a brand and its audience.

Where did the inspiration for Launderette come from?

After nearly two years of freelancing, we started having conversations about our next move. We were in our mid-20s and craving something with more stability. Over Christmas dinner with my family, my parents were talking about how many of their friends had recently retired from industries that had become overlooked by people in our generation. These so-called “boring businesses”, the true backbone of society, had become less desirable career paths, even though they were essential and full of untapped potential.

That conversation sparked something for Ben and me, and we started researching industries that could use a refresh. The more we looked, the more we realized how many of these overlooked spaces had room for innovation. Laundromats had been on our radar early on, there’s a huge need for them in NYC, but we also saw that many were falling short. Lack of seating, outdated equipment, and, most importantly to us, a complete lack of branding and customer connection.

“We’re not just here to clean clothes, we’re here to change how people feel about laundry in New York. Every load is handled with intention, and every decision we make comes back to the same standard: Genuine Care.”

What inspired Launderette?

We saw a huge opportunity to reimagine the laundromat experience. Laundry is a hyper-personal, experience-based service. People invest in their clothes, and we believed the care they receive should reflect that.

Launderette was founded with a mission to revolutionize how New Yorkers handle this essential task. More than just a laundromat, we set out to build a space that feels thoughtful, reliable, and community-driven, where convenience meets innovation, and where every detail shows we care.

What’s the best thing about doing your laundry at Launderette?

Our goal at Launderette is to make laundry feel less like a chore and more like an experience.

We’ve designed every part of the space with that in mind. The large, open seating area gives you room to hang out, get some work done, or just relax. Our staff is trained in hospitality, not just laundry. They’re warm, helpful, and genuinely care about your experience. And with our energy and water-efficient systems, doing your laundry here is better for the planet too.

We also offer healthier food and beverage options, so if you're grabbing a snack while you wait, you're not stuck choosing between a soda and a candy bar.

Your space is unlike any other laundromat we’ve ever seen. What inspired this design? Who are some of your references?

From the very beginning, we knew design would be at the heart of our brand. Clean but comfortable, stylish yet approachable. When we found the space that Launderette now calls home, we were immediately drawn to the concrete floors and decided to embrace raw materials and earthy tones to balance out the inevitable metal from our machines.

Function was always top of mind, so incorporating comfortable seating and leaving plenty of open space came naturally. Keeping costs as low as possible was also a big factor. We painted the entire space ourselves and leaned on friends in the interior design world to help us source our furniture.

What makes Launderette different from other laundromats in the city?

From day one, it was incredibly important to us to create a space that felt elevated, thoughtful, and human—without losing sight of affordability. We wanted to offer a high-quality laundry experience that still felt accessible to our neighbors and community members.

That shows up in everything we do, from the clean, design-forward space to the non-toxic products we use, the care we take with each item, and the way we communicate with our customers. We’re not just here to clean clothes, we’re here to change how people feel about laundry in New York. Every load is handled with intention, and every decision we make comes back to the same standard: Genuine Care.

What’s the vibe in Launderette? What kind of music do you play? What are people doing while their clothes are washing?
The vibe is upbeat, lively, and always a little different, and that’s by design. We let our team choose the music throughout the day, so you’re not hearing the same playlist on repeat. It keeps the energy fresh, and our customers actually love that it changes with the mood of the day.

One of the coolest things we’ve seen since opening is how people have started hanging out at the store for longer. In the beginning, most customers dropped their clothes off and went on with their day, which makes sense, especially in New York. But over time, more and more people have started bringing their laptops, reading a book, or just hanging out while their laundry gets done. That’s exactly what we built Launderette to be, a third space where people feel good spending their time. Seeing that vision come to life has been one of the most rewarding parts of it all.

What makes Laundry Sauce the ideal detergent for your community to use during their visit?

Laundry Sauce pairs perfectly with what we’re all about: elevated essentials and a better laundry experience. It smells amazing, delivers a professional clean, and turns a simple wash into something you actually look forward to.

What does detergent with fine fragrance like Laundry Sauce add to the laundry experience?

A great-smelling detergent in a convenient pod adds a simple layer of self-care to your routine. It’s an easy upgrade that feels good every time.

What’s next for Launderette? Any big plans to expand or change the space?

We’re just getting started. The vision for Launderette has always been bigger than one space, our goal is to reimagine the laundry experience across New York City and, eventually, cities all over the country. We want to bring the same thoughtful design, hospitality-driven service, and community-first mindset to neighborhoods that deserve better laundry options. It’s about making something as routine as laundry feel more intentional, more enjoyable, and more human.
